Ian Mills of I Mills Electrics in Croydon talks to Zano Controls about his experiences with LED dimming, the current demand for outdoor lighting and his journey into the electrical industry.

Why did you become an electrician?
I have always had a fascination with how things work, and my childhood was often spent taking things apart to test this. I wasn’t always successful putting them back together again, but you learn. From there, my interests developed into the simple stuff at school - motors and circuits - and well, that was it.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I really enjoy solving problems, or coming up with solutions to meet customers’ wishes - especially, when they have been told something can’t be done.
What’s the most interesting job you’ve completed to date?
Definitely working in a premier league footballer’s home.
What are the biggest challenges you face day-to-day?
My biggest day-to-day challenge is time! There’s never enough time.
What services are most in demand this year?
This year I’ve seen a move towards more outdoor living and lighting in gardens, alongside EV charging.
Fun fact about you?
Whilst trying to impress someone, I slipped and ended up in the Thames up to my chest late one night!
How did you find out about Zano Controls?
I had a problem with a customer’s lights that would not dim. Barry - he knows who he is - was working at a local national electrical wholesaler and told me about Zano Controls and their dimmers. I always remember him saying “you will never regret fitting them” and to this day, I never have.
What’s the biggest LED dimming problem you’ve faced?
The biggest problem used to be achieving reliable dimming across different manufacturers’ LED products, but that’s no longer the case when using Zano products.
What’s your go-to Zano product?
My go-to Zano product is the ZMO150 module.
If you could rewire anyone’s house, who would it be?
If I could rewire anyone’s house it would be Neil Armstrong. Walking on the moon was mankind’s greatest achievement, and he was right there in the middle of it all.
